The Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology (MPIMM) hosts nine departments that investigate the diversity and functions of marine microorganisms and their interactions with the marine environment. The focus of the Microbial Genomics and Bioinformatics Research Group is on developing enabling technologies to transform the wealth of sequence and environmental data into biological knowledge. Techniques are whole genome and metagenome analysis, sequence classification, phylogenetic inference, and software and database development for integrated data analysis.
MPIMM and AWI are the two German partners in ASSEMBLE Plus. Two German marine stations, which are the main centres of coastal research within AWI, provide access services for ASSEMBLE Plus,
- AWI-BAH (Biologische Anstalt Helgoland)
- Wattenmeerstation Sylt
MPIMM established the Ocean Sampling Day (OSD) network and conducted OSD in 2014 and 2015 as part of the 7FP project Micro B3. Transferring the experiences and technological expertise and software components to establish the GO network will be a central task of MPIMM; the responsiblity for OSD 2018 was taken over by HCMR.
MPIMM will contribute to JRA1 and NA2.
